Transforming the Cube with Bill Abright
November 7 & 8 - Enrollment Open!
9 spots left
Class Description
Join Bill Abright at Clayroom San Mateo for a two day workshop where students will learn to make a variety of sculptural box forms from the common beginning of a 4" cube. Using a homemade tile cutter to cut 6 equal sides from a pre-prepared slab, we will assemble them into cubes using scratch and slip joinery, augmented with stitching the seams to make a form durable enough to transform by pressing and paddling into organic non cube shapes. After an overnight drying period, the forms and surfaces will be refined and lid divisions that have been designed into the form will be cut, interiors finished, and lids re-attached with wax resist to guarantee a perfect fit when fired. Saturday, November 7 & Sunday, November 8 from 10:30am - 2:30pm Bill Abright is an artist who seeks to create beauty in the space between order and chaos. Introduced to clay by Bruce Duke at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton in the late 60's, Abright completed his graduate degree at San Francisco State in 1974. For 40 years he shaped the lives of countless artists as a beloved instructor at the College of Marin. Since retirement, Abright has expanded his sculptural figurative practice to embrace steel, glass and found objects. His work is held in prestigious collections including the Oakland Museum of California and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. A true California clay legend.
