Hands-On Soda Firing Pottery Workshop for Ceramic Artists in the Bay Area California

Soda Firing with Oribe Firing Center

October 10 & 17 - Enrollment Opens 8/21 @ 11AM!

250 US dollars
South Delaware Street

Class Description

Come experience the magic (and science) of soda firing in scenic San Gregorio at Clay Creations' Oribe Atmospheric Firing Center! This unique opportunity is available exclusively for Clayroom members. Soda firing is a type of atmospheric firing method in which the swirling currents and drafts within the gas kiln make their mark on each piece. Soda ash is sprayed into the kiln at peak temperatures and turns into a vapor that the flames propel, reacting with the clay and glaze to create a distinctive coating wherever the current takes it. Each kiln firing, and thus each piece, is totally unique, completely one-off and unrepeatable. This workshop will be open to Clayroom members only, and will cover the fundamentals of soda firing, including discussion of clay bodies, wadding, and the science behind what's actually happening in the kiln during a soda firing. Registration includes one bag of Cone 10 b-mix (***must be picked up at Clayroom San Mateo***), 1 cubic foot in the soda kiln, and access to 8 flashing slips and 6 glazes that are compatible with soda firing. Participants must bring their bisque-fired pieces to the workshop site which they will glaze and prepare on the day of the workshop. ***ALL BISQUE MUST BE MADE WITH PROVIDED CONE 10 CLAY*** (Participants WILL be held liable for any kiln shelf damage due to overfired clay) Saturday, October 10: 9AM - 3PM Workshop participants will learn and discuss the mechanics of soda firing and the firing process, as well as the different flashing slips and glazes available. We will glaze and/or slip our bisque. After a lunch break, we will wad our pieces and load the kiln. The kiln will be fired over the following few days by Clay Creations staff. Participants are welcome to come help fire the kiln and spray soda but it is not required of anyone. Saturday, October 17: 9AM - 11AM Participants will unload the kiln and clean the shelves, clean the area around the kiln, and kiln wash the shelves. You are welcome to bring food/snacks! Note: Participants are required to attend both days of this workshop (10/10 and 10/17)
