Class Description
Step into a dynamic two-day workshop with Jason Walker, whose thirty year practice brings imagery and form together in striking, dimensional ceramics. Working in porcelain, participants will create functional pieces through both wheel throwing and slab handbuilding, then bring them to life with expressive underglaze painting and surface design. Through live demos and personalized guidance, you’ll learn how to seamlessly integrate drawing and form into bold, narrative driven work. Note: This workshop features both wheel throwing and handbuilding demos, you may stick to just one method preferred. Friday, May 8, 2026 (10:30 AM- 4:30 PM) with 30 minute lunch break Saturday, May 9 2026 (10:30 AM- 4:30 PM) with 30 minute lunch break Day 1: Intro PPT, make small 6"x6" tiles. Slab cup demo (~1 hr), then work time until lunch with individual check-ins. After lunch, slab animal head demo (~1 hr), then open work time. Day 2: Underglaze demo (~1 hr), then finish wet clay work and painting. Timing may shift based on class progress, but demo happens by after lunch at the latest. Materials List: Participants should bring tools for throwing and hand-building such as: Serrated ribs Carving and trimming tools Xacto knife A small 6"x6” tile for use as a painting palette (Home Depot for $.89) Various water color paint brushes (small liners and small flats are ideal) A sketchbook for notes and ideas Reference imagery you would like to explore What’s included: -bisque & glaze firing services, clay, underglazes, glazes, & hands-on instruction from Jason Jason currently lives in Utah, where he is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Southern Utah University. He has shown extensively nationally and internationally. His work is included in museum collections such as the Carnegie Museum, The Fine Art Museum of San Francisco: De Young, The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum. "In my ceramic sculpture, I have been exploring how technology has influenced and molded our perceptions of nature. Yet, what is nature exactly? What image is conceived with the word? How have we, human beings, arrived at such a perception of ourselves and nature? Part of an answer lies within the arena of ‘human creations’ – or technology." Refund Policy: - A refund (minus $20 processing fee) or credit in full will be granted if a cancellation request is received at least TWO WEEKS prior to the day of class - For cancellation requests made less than two weeks before the class start date, a credit (no refund) MAY be granted ONLY if your spot can be filled - If multi-day workshop, no refunds or credits are granted after attending the first day - Try Days or Workshops missed due to failure to attend will not be credited Picking Up Artwork: Pieces made in Try Days take a minimum of four weeks to fully complete (bisque and glaze firing). We will email you once everything is complete and is ready to be picked up, please check your spam folder just in case! In-person pick up is required, we do not ship.
