Class Description
Note: NO CLASS will be held from June 29 - July 5 due to Independence Day Mondays @ 5:45 - 8:15pm, June 22 - August 3 with Eva Smerekanych **NO CLASS 6/29** Explore the foundations of figurative sculpture in this six-week ceramics class focused on building expressive human forms in clay. Through demonstrations, anatomy studies, armature construction, & hands-on sculpting exercises, students will learn how to translate movement, proportion, gesture, & emotion into dynamic three-dimensional figures - from rough body blocking to detailed hands, faces, & surface finishing. Along the way, students will develop a deeper understanding of the human body while creating a fully realized glazed figurative sculpture of their own. Week 1: Introduction, Overview & Body Study - Figurative sculpture tools, techniques, & artistic possibilities - Overview of human body proportions, basic anatomy, & the challenges of working in 3D - Guided creation of a seated or reclining figure study focused on massing & proportion - Discussion on proper clay storage to maintain freshness and workability between classes - Complete a blocked-out human figure with foundational proportions established Week 2: Finishing Basic Body Study & Armature Posing Intro - Refine & develop the figure study from Week 1 - Demo on building wire armatures for standing & dynamic posed figures - Explore gesture, movement, & pose through observation & body-based exercises - Begin shaping & constructing a personalized armature for a final figurative sculpture Week 3: Torso, Legs & Feet - Study the major muscle groups through anatomy discussion & movement-based exercises - Learn techniques for applying & building clay onto a wire armature - Finalize figure poses & begin sculpting the legs, torso, & basic feet of the final figure sculpture Week 4: Arms, Hands & Head - Explore the anatomy & expressive potential of the arms & hands through demo & discussion - Practice sculpting hands with guided exercises [rapid-fire hand-building study] - Add arms, hands, & foundational head structure to the developing sculpture Week 5: Head & Expressions - Canons of the head/face - Demo of expressions Week 6: Discussion & Glaze party! - Surface techniques - Critique & wrap up Class includes: - 25 lbs of clay - 6-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes

Policies
Class Fees & Schedule: - Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and kiln firings - Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay - Classes are subject to change if the minimum student quota (7) isn't met - Class switches will only be available one week prior to the commencement of classes and are based on the capacity of classes at time of request Attendance: - It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first class - If a class meeting is missed, students can drop into an available class on Clayroom SM's Makeup class spreadsheet if space permits (limit two drop-in's per class meeting) - For adult classes, participants must be at least 14 years of age Personal Belongings: - Any items left behind 30 days after the final class meeting may be discarded without notice Refund Policy: - A refund (minus $20 processing fee) or credit in full will be granted if a cancellation request is received at least TWO WEEKS prior to the day of class - For cancellation requests made less than two weeks before the class start date, a credit (no refund) MAY be granted ONLY if your spot can be filled - No refunds or credits will be granted after attending first class meeting - Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes Student Open Studio Hours: Monday - Thursday: 10AM - 6PM Friday - Sunday: 10AM - 9PM Hours subject to change upon five days' notice
