Class Description
This course is for Clayroom Members Only Wednesdays @ 6:00 - 8:30pm, November 4 - December 16 with Mike Browne *** No class on November 25 due to Thanksgiving Holiday*** Delve into the science and beauty of glaze mixing to create multiple glazes of your choice! This course will be six weeks of instruction centered around glazes: what they are, how they are made, application methods, glaze defects, experimentation and combination. Students will reserve time to use the glaze mixing room between class meetings to ensure safety for all. You will make multiple 100 gram batches of glazes and mix a 1,000 gram batch of your favorite glaze at the end of the class to use for your own projects. By completing this course, you will have a basic understanding of all things glaze, both technical and creative! Week 1: Introduction to Glazes: measuring ingredients accurately, do’s/dont’s, line blends, recipe research, Glazy.com, glaze book resources, glaze components, & assigning glaze room usage Week 2: Glaze test tile review #1: common glaze defects & how to fix/avoid them, using online resources to help improve glazes. Week 3: Glaze test tile review #2: understanding the Stull Chart, functions of different glaze components & second glaze mixing round (students will choose new glazes or modify the previous week’s glazes) Week 4: Glaze test tile review #3: understanding effect of clay body on glaze & third glaze mixing round Week 5: Glaze test tile review #4: discussion of “non traditional” glazes (ash, crawls, crystallines/crackles, vomits and gloops), using online custom glaze manufacturers & fourth glaze mixing round Week 6: Potluck & "Glazing Buffet," voting on glazes for staff to consider adding to studio! *Note: Students will need to create pieces to glaze outside of designated class time Required Materials: - Respirator - Notebook - Ten pint-sized containers with lids Class includes: - 1/2 a bag of clay (12.5 lbs) - 4-weeks of 2.5 hours of instruction - Unlimited use of studio during open studio hours - Firing fees - Glazes

Policies
Class Fees & Schedule: - Class fees cover instructed class time (as listed in specific class schedule), use of tools and equipment, open studio hours, studio glazes and kiln firings - Pottery class fees include 25 lbs of clay - Classes are subject to change if the minimum student quota (7) isn't met - Class switches will only be available one week prior to the commencement of classes and are based on the capacity of classes at time of request Attendance: - It is mandatory for all students who are new to the studio attend the first class - If a class meeting is missed, students can drop into an available class on Clayroom SM's Makeup class spreadsheet if space permits (limit two drop-in's per class meeting) - For adult classes, participants must be at least 14 years of age Personal Belongings: - Any items left behind 30 days after the final class meeting may be discarded without notice Refund Policy: - A refund (minus $20 processing fee) or credit in full will be granted if a cancellation request is received at least TWO WEEKS prior to the day of class - For cancellation requests made less than two weeks before the class start date, a credit (no refund) MAY be granted ONLY if your spot can be filled - No refunds or credits will be granted after attending first class meeting - Classes missed due to failure to attend, planned absences, minor illnesses or vacations will not be credited for future classes Student Open Studio Hours: Monday - Thursday: 10AM - 6PM Friday - Sunday: 10AM - 9PM Hours subject to change upon five days' notice
