Raku Firing @ ClayCreations

One Day Workshop (Members Only)

  • Starts Aug 24
  • 120 US dollars
  • Clayroom San Mateo

Class Description

When: Saturday, August 24 @ 7:45 AM Where: ClayCreations, 7480 Stage Road, San Gregorio, CA 94074 Please note this workshop is for Clayroom San Mateo members ONLY! If you would also like to participate in the Pit Firing, you will need to purchase that workshop in addition to the Raku workshop. Raku firing is very fast, so there will be rounds of firings all day - this is a very interactive process! Margaret, the owner of Clay Creations, will teach participants about this unique process, show some examples, and explain the glaze choices prior to starting. Please bring 5-6 small to medium pieces, Raku glazes will be provided. Some guidelines for the types of pieces best suited for Raku: - Avoid flat pieces such as plates, they are more prone to cracking - Round or cylindrical pieces are best as they are easily picked up using Raku tongs (think vases, moon jars, decorative bowls, etc.) - Typically, a thicker piece is more apt to withstand the thermal shock of Raku firing *Raku pieces are not fully vitrified so are NOT food safe or water tight. A separate cylinder can be made as an insert to vases if you want your piece to be functional. If you would like to learn more about Raku, visit these informative links: https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/daily/article/Successful-Tips-and-Techniques-for-Raku-Firing https://www.soulceramics.com/pages/raku-firing Workshop includes: - 25 lb bag B-Mix with Grog - Firing fees - Raku glazes
