Pit Firing @ ClayCreations

One Day Workshop (Members Only)

  • Starts Aug 24
  • 120 US dollars
  • Clayroom San Mateo

Class Description

When: Saturday, August 24 @ 7:45 AM - 4:00 PM Where: ClayCreations, 7480 Stage Road, San Gregorio, CA 94074 Please note this workshop is for Clayroom San Mateo members ONLY! If you would also like to participate in the Raku Firing, you will need to purchase that workshop in addition to the Pit Firing workshop. "Pit firing is a primitive, low-tech method of firing pots. Traditionally a pit was dug into the earth, and pots were fired in this pit with wood and other organic materials, such as dried dung, used as fuel. Cultures around the world used this method of firing pottery before the introduction of kilns, which allowed for a hotter fire." - Jorie Berman, Biscuit Ceramics The pit at ClayCreations is above ground vs. dug into the ground and remains open during firing. You can expect the fire to start to die down ~ 1 - 2 pm at which time you can take your pieces out and clean them up. Every firing is different - these are general timelines. Please bring 5-6 pieces up to 1000 cubic inches (10"x10"x10") in total. Clayroom will be offering two power hours - one to teach you how to apply and burnish terra sigillata (August 10 @ 4:30PM with Isabella) and one to teach you how to prep your pots for firing (August 23 @ 5PM with Alissa). The magical part about pit firing is using organic materials to produce colors - the link provided below talks about that and suggests materials for use. There are other resources online for organic material use, so start Googling! We will provide copper carbonate. All other organic materials will be provided by you, so start collecting them! Some guidelines for the types of pieces best suited for Pit Firing: - Avoid flat pieces such as plates, they are more prone to cracking - Typically, a thicker piece is more apt to withstand the thermal shock of Pit firing - Sculptural pieces If you would like to learn more about Pit Firing, visit these informative links: https://biscuitceramics.com/blogs/news/pit-firing http://janewhiteceramics.com/pit-firing/ Workshop includes: - 25 lb bag B-Mix with Grog - Firing fees - Two Power Hours (Pit Firing related)
