April 26 & 27 - Only 2 Spots Left!

From 275 US dollars
South Delaware Street

Class Description

We are thrilled to welcome Sydnie Jimenez to Clayroom San Mateo for a two-day workshop! This workshop is open to anyone with any level of prior clay experience, and materials/firing will be provided. Friday (4/25) – FREE artist talk @ 7pm Saturday (4/26) – Day 1: 11AM-4PM w/ one-hour lunch break Saturday (4/27) – Day 2: 11AM-4PM w/ one-hour lunch break Figurative sculpture can carry with it connotations of realism and perfect proportions to scale: Greco Roman sculptures, for instance, or a smooth white marble bust depicting someone powerful. In this workshop, participants will reimagine the bust in a more expansive way that centers expression and personality. This workshop also emphasizes freedom of material, and how a creative vision can be realized despite not having the most particular materials available to you. On Day 1, Sydnie will go over how she builds her figures and creates a closed form using flattened coils, as well as how she sculpts/textures faces and hair. Participants' pieces will be roughly 12-14" tall. On Day 2, a variety of surface finishes, such as slips, underglazes, and oxides, will be covered as participants finish up their pieces. Sydnie Jimenez (b. Orlando, FL 1997) received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2020) focusing in ceramic sculpture and is a recipient of the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship (2020). Much of her work centers around the representation and humanization of black and brown youth in an American context. She illustrates in clay self-expression as a form of protest and self care to protect against a Eurocentric society founded on white supremacy and colonization. She has recently shown with galleries in the US and abroad including Albertz-Benda (LA), Moosey Gallery (UK), Mindy Solomon Gallery (Miami), and Anthony Gallery (Chicago). Jimenez was recently a long-term resident artist at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago and previously at the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana. She currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.
